Divorce cases in Ohio and elsewhere, especially those involving people with substantial assets, can become contentious. Ruben Studdard, known as the "Velvet Teddy Bear" after his winning stint on American Idol, has filed for divorce from his wife of three years. Citing a "complete incompatibility of temperament" as the reason for the divorce, Studdard is requesting the enforcement of a signed prenuptial agreement.

Filed in Alabama, the divorce papers show that Studdard and his wife have not lived together since October of 2010 and she has since moved to Georgia. In Studdard's case, a prenuptial agreement may alleviate some of the tension that divorce can cause.

Divorce does not always have to end in bitterness or with unnecessary litigation. With proper planning before the wedding and a signed prenuptial agreement, if a marriage ends in divorce the parties should not be surprised by the division of assets. Engaging in a collaborative divorce, where both parties and their lawyers work together to resolve conflicts instead of going directly into litigation, can serve as a way to act in everyone's best interests and can stop the possibility of someone regretting their actions while pursuing divorce.

Couples in Ohio who are contemplating a divorce may want to think about pursuing legal avenues to ensure a fair and equitable settlement between the parties. If children are involved, working together can minimize the negative impact divorce sometimes has upon them. People who have many assets and a high financial value should strongly consider the implementation of a prenuptial agreement before tying the knot.
